Frequently Asked Questions
Schedule changes & cancellations?
Training may be canceled for inclement weather or unsafe conditions. We post updates on our Facebook page by 3:00 PM ET on the day of training. If no update appears, class is on.
Who can join (age & experience)?
Our programs are open to all, welcoming teens and adults 14 and above. No prior experience is required. Beginners and experienced practitioners are welcome; training is scaled to the individual.
How do classes run—what should I expect?
Warm-Up & Mobility Exercises: Build sound body mechanics and prep the joints.
Physical Conditioning: Use calisthenics and simple tools to develop strength and stamina.
Group & Individual Practice: Move from instructor-led drills to self-paced rounds with coaching and targeted adjustments.
Partner Work: Apply techniques in controlled drills to develop distance, timing, off-balancing, and tactile sensitivity (kakie).
Can I drop in to try a class?
Yes. Karate in the Park is free and open to the public—arrive a few minutes early to introduce yourself. For Small-Group Training, please contact us in advance to arrange a visit. (Waiver required.)
What should I bring?
Wear comfortable workout clothing. Bring a water bottle, a small towel, and a positive attitude.
Do I need a uniform?
No, not for Karate in the Park or private sessions. However, a white keikogi & obi are required for our more formal Small-Group Training.
Is this a sports or tournament program?
No, it is not. We practice authentic Okinawan Gōjū-Ryū Karate and Yamanni Chinen-Ryū Kobujutsu with an emphasis on martial strategy and application, not competition.
What if I'm out of shape?
That’s okay. Come as you are; we'll scale intensity and volume to your level and build from there.
